Aspen is perfect for holidaying at any time of year, although particularly great in winter when the ski season is in full swing. To see a unique site not far from the city, jump in your car hire and head south of town along Castle Creek Rd. About twenty minutes away you will find the ghost town of Ashcroft, complete with deserted saloons and buildings. Having experienced a rapid boom in the 1880s when silver was discovered, Ashcroft grew to a population of several thousand people in just a few years. This same population however left in even less time, when silver levels ran low and more was discovered in nearby Aspen, leaving behind an eerie deserted area.

Southwest of Aspen, lies one of the most photographed areas in the Rockies, the Maroon Bells. A massive mountain standing over 14,000 feet tall, the Maroon Bells is made up of two great peaks composed of mudstone which has formed rock. A rich earthy colour gives the mountain its name, and a pristine lake at the foot of the mountains adds to the spectacular scenery, definitely a highly recommended outing for anyone visiting the area.
