A great way to begin your visit to Cairo is by heading to the home of more ancient Egyptian artifacts than any other place, the Egyptian Museum. Located on the east side of the Nile river near the city centre, the museum was established in the 1830s and holds over 120,000 items from the nation’s past. Many items in the collection are thousands of years old, and one display not to be missed is that of the treasures of Tutankhamun, including his death mask.
Drive your hire car southeast from the museum to the heart of the city, known as Old Cairo, where you will find some of Cairo’s most important buildings. Within old town you will find the massive 500 room Abdeen Palace, and also the Babylon Fortress, Hanging Church and Ben Ezra Synagogue. Further southeast from here you can also visit the 12th century Citadel, with very impressive architecture and great views across the city. Definitely not to be missed.
The most famous attractions though are without a doubt the Great Pyramids, found on the western border of the city. The last remaining member of the Seven Wonders of the World, the pyramids were built over 4,000 years ago and to this day never cease to amaze. Beside the pyramids you can also see the famous Sphinx, which stand over 20 metres high.
A visit to Cairo can be as long or short as you desire, with a list of things to see and do that seems endless. Apart from the many historical sights and museums, you can visit some of the biggest markets in the region, eat at restaurants that have been serving food for many generations, or perhaps hop on a boat and enjoy a cruise on the Nile. It’s easy to see why so many visitors come here year after year.
