Charleston was established as a town in 1670, and had an interesting history from the start. Unlike some other US towns, Charleston soon saw multiple nationalities coming to settle here together, including British, French, German and Irish groups. Each culture and religion added their own element to the city, this is something which can still be seen in the atmosphere and culture of the city today.

For a great introduction to Charleston and the local area, jump in your Charleston Car Rental and drive towards the centre of the city, where you can visit the Charleston Museum, located just near Wragg Square. This is in fact the first museum in the USA, opened in 1773, and tells the story of the city and state, as well as housing displays on natural history.

The historic city centre itself is a must for visitors here, and features a great number of buildings which were spared during wars, and these include some of the earliest homes and buildings in the city. This, combined with rules regulating how high new buildings can be built, and also the fact that over 180 churches are found here, makes Charleston a truly unique city to explore indeed.

Ironically, while Charleston saw little damage from the civil war compared to other cities, it is actually here where the war began, and the site can still be visited today. Drive your rental car down towards the waterfront, from where you can board the ferry to Fort Sumter, located near the mouth of the harbour. You can also see a great collection of navy ships, submarines, and aircraft at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, located across on the other side of the harbour.
