To get there drive your hire car a short distance out of the town centre along the Goldfields Highway. During the gold rush in the area, Kalgoorlie experienced a great boom in wealth, and this is reflected through various buildings around the town. Already the largest open cut mine in Australia, the pit will eventually cover an area of 3.9 by 1.6km and have a depth of 500 metres. For an interesting comparison to another historic mining town, jump in your hire car and take the short drive north to Broad Arrow. Once a booming hub home to over 15,000 people, Broad Arrow was abandoned when nearby gold was depleted and is now a ghost town, an interesting contrast to the still thriving Kalgoorlie.
