The most famous of all attractions in the area is without a doubt the Knock Shrine, the site where in 1879 the Virgin Mary, St Joseph and St John are said to have appeared to locals. The site has since become an important pilgrimage destination for Roman Catholics, who make the journey here each year. So large are the crowds that a very impressive basilica was built here in the 1960s, capable of holding up to 10,000 people.

The area near here has been inhabited for thousands of years, and to the north, you can visit a truly ancient site. Drive your hire car towards the town of Ballycastle, near the north coast. Right beside the town is Ceide Fields, the oldest known field system in the world. Dating back over 5,000 years, researchers have uncovered complete villages here, which are older than almost any other man made structure that has been discovered. Jump in your hire car and head southwest of here, where you can visit Achill Island, the largest in all of Ireland.
