Car Hire in Port Macquarie

Car Rental in Port Macquarie

First settled as a penal colony in the 1800’s, Port Macquarie soon became popular with pioneers due to the abundance of fish in the harbour, as well as wildlife and fertile farming grounds on the land. Situated on the mouth of the Hastings River, the city offers an array of different activities and attractions to choose from, with plenty to do both in the water as well as on dry land. With the scenic forests and countryside to the west, and pristine coastline ready to be explored, Port Macquarie is an ideal destination for travelling with a hire car, whether on a driving holiday, or simply collecting your car at the airport.

Drive a Car Hire in Port Macquarie

A great way to start your visit to Port Macquarie, is by checking out the lookout at Flagstaff Hill. Drive your Port Macquarue Car Hire up to the hill, which was once an observation post for the navy, and is now open to the public offering great views of the area. Be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins and whales which frequent the area. Right near Flagstaff Hill you will find the Mid North Coast Maritime Museum. Housing various artefacts and documents relating to the cities maritime history, the museum offers a great insight into the forming years of the city.

For a great day in the city, drive your hire car down to the Town Green, located in the city centre. Town Green is a large park on the banks of the Hastings River, with many cafes and restaurants nearby. Moored at the wharf beside the park is Alma Doepel, a sailing ship which is over 100 years old and open for tours.

To get up close and personal with the local wildlife, jump in your car hire and take a short drive west of the city to Billabong Park, a large animal sanctuary. The park is home to a great range of Australian wildlife, including birds and reptiles, as well as koalas, kangaroos and wombats. Not far from Billabong Park, you can find Timbertown, a heritage theme park. Home to a replicated 19th century colony, Timbertown features all things you would expect from the early days of the area, such as sawmills, steam trains and horse drawn carriages.

Once you have seen some of the nearby sights and attractions, it’s time to enjoy the magnificent beaches the area has to offer. There are nine beaches in the city itself, with North Beach and Town Beach being among the more popular ones. For a unique nature experience, drive a short distance south from Port Macquarie to Sea Acres Nature Reserve, located on the coastline. A large protected area, the reserve contains several kinds of rainforests with raised boardwalks throughout. Bordering the shore means this is one of the few places you can walk directly from a lush rainforest onto the beach, offering an amazing day out enjoying the local nature.
