Drive a Hire Car in Siena
You can collect your hire car from the downtown depots located throughout the city. However if you prefer to pick up your car hire from an airport location you can travel to Siena from Florence located just 60 kilometres south, Rome located north approximately a 3 hour drive in your hire car or Milan about 4 hours drive.
The Piazza del Campo is a great place to start as it is at the heart of the city. This Piazza is famous for the annual summer horse-race known as the Palio. It is surrounded by fabulous architecture sharing the real flavour of medieval times. The Palazzo Pubblico is a beautiful palace which dominates the Piazza. The Palazzo Pubblico displays the different periods of construction and is considered to be one of the best examples of medieval and gothic architecture. The imposing bell tower is a great place to check out the amazing views of the city below, the tower reaches height of up to 88 metres and can be reached by 400 steps, but well worth it.
Siena’s Duomo is one of the most popular attractions which display a unique black and white Romanesque Cathedral with delicate carvings and statues. But the interior is just as impressive with a marble floor bejeweled with a series of pictures. The Duomo also houses the Baptistery and the crypt displaying intriguing archaeological history, and a museum showcasing wonderful works of art. Next to the Piazza del Duomo you can travel over to the Torre del Mangia which offers a 360 degree views of Siena and its surrounding towns.
