A great place to begin your tour of the area is by driving your rental car into the heart of the city and visiting one of the oldest and most important buildings in the area, Chateau d’Annecy, a castle dating back to the 12th century, which stands high on a hill between the lake and town centre. Restored over the past century to it’s former glory, the castle is an impressive sight indeed, and also contains a small museum housing a collection of traditional arts and crafts from the area.

Another historic icon of the city is located not far from the castle, and is the Palais de L’Isle, a building located in centre of the Thiou Canal which runs right through town. Dating back to the 12th century, the building was also built in the 12th century, as the home to a local lord. Unique in it’s location in the water, the Palais was later a mint, then also a jail, and now houses a small museum.

To see a truly unique site of natural beauty, jump in your hire car and take a short drive west of Annecy, where you can visit the Gorges Du Fier, an impressive sight indeed. Formed over thousands of years, this is where the River Fier has carved out a network of giant gorges and potholes, some almost 30 metres deep, with crystal clear waters running below, an impressive sight to say the least.

Near the gorges, you can also visit a great historic manor, ther Chatteau de Montrottier, a castle which dates back to the 13th century. Located high up on a hill, the castle provides great views of the area, and also houses collections of rare furniture, weapons, ceramics and other historic objects from Asia and Africa.
