Located on the North West Cape of Western Australia, Exmouth is a small town which was originally a base for refuelling submarines used in World War II. Since the war, the area has relied on the fishing industry and tourism, and has managed to remain a small country town.

The most famous attraction in the area is Ningaloo Reef, which stretched along the coast near Exmouth. Being quite close to the shore means at certain parts, you can actually swim out to the reef. Park your hire car near Turquoise Bay and dive into the warm tropical waters where you will find many examples of corals and colourful fish. To visit the rest of the reef, drive your hire car to nearby Coral Bay, and head out on a boat with guides who will take you to some magnificent dive sights. From April to July, Whale Sharks come to the reef in great numbers to feed, and there are many tours which incorporate diving and swimming with these enormous creatures.

During autumn and spring the bay in which Exmouth lies becomes a breeding ground for Humpback Whales. Park your rental car near the shore, and keep an eye out for the whales, which are so plentiful there are often several sightings a day. About an hour drive from Exmouth in your hire car, you can visit the world famous Cape Range National Park. Covering over 50,000 hectares of canyons, rocky ranges and beaches, the unique sights of the park are highly recommended for anyone lucky enough to be travelling in the area with their own rental car. The park has hundreds of caves, and an abundance of wildlife, much of which is found nowhere else in the world.
