Driving Licence
A full valid driver’s license is required for a minimum of 1 years. An International licence is recommended for Australian drivers licence holders.
Age Restrictions

Rules and Regulations
General driving rules and regulations in Hungary;
- Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road.
- Overtake on the left hand side of the road.
- Dipped headlights must be used at all time.
- The use of mobile phones are prohibited while driving, with the exception of a hands-free system.
- All passengers and driver are required to wear a seat belt.
- Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid drivers licence, registration documents and insurance documents.
Child Safety Seats
Children under the age of 3 are required to be seated in a child safety seat. Children up to a height of 150cm must only be seated in the back seats of the vehicle.
Speed Limits
Police have increasingly started cracking down on motorists speeding and other traffic violations. If your caught speeding you face being hit with a pay-on-the-spot fine. Below are the speed limits in Germany, unless posted otherwise.
- Urban Roads (built up areas): 50km/h
- Rural Roads (outside towns) 90-100km/h
- Motorways: 110-130km/h
Drink Driving
You are not allowed any alcohol (zero BAC) while driving in Hungary.
Tolls
Tolls currently exist on the following motorways; M1, M3, M5 and the M7. Motorway e-stickers can be purchased from most petrol stations around the country.
Road Signs
Road Signs in Hungary adopts the standardization of the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals which many European countries now utilize, but with slight variance. Signs in Hungary are commonly found in the countries local language however English is also used on city roads and state highways. The signs are very easy to understand as the vast majority of them are posted with symbols. Warning Signs are generally triangular in shape with a red border, white background or yellow and a symbol in the middle. Prohibitory Signs are signs which motorists must follow. These signs vary in shapes from a circle, octagon and a box. You will find these signs in either blue with a white symbol in the middle and white with a red border. Information Signs are indicated with a blue or green background and white text providing motorists with information.
Parking
Parking within the city of Budapest are broken up into zones where a parking fee is payable depending on the zone parked in. Parking tickets are charged on an hourly basis and can be purchased from vending machines along the street. Make sure that your ticket is visibly displayed on your front windscreen as parking patrols regulatly pass by. If your vehicle is found without a ticket or parked illegally you'll find your vehicle left with a fine and your wheel clamped or worse impounded.
Visa Information
Visa, Passport and entry requirements for Australians visiting Hungary;
- Australians passport holders do not require a visa for the purpose of tourism for stays up to 90 days. Contact the Hungary Embassy in your local state for stays longer than 90 days or special visa's.
- A valid passport is required with at-least 6 months validity from the date of departure from Hungary.
