Driving Licence

A full valid driver’s license is required for a minimum of 1 year. An International licence is required for Australian drivers licence holders.

Age Restrictions

Generally the minimum age is 23 years, but can vary between the car hire company and location. Maximum age limits apply in some locations, a young/senior driver surcharge may apply. Please check Terms and Conditions when making an enquiry or booking.

Rules and Regulations

General driving rules and regulations in Malaysia;

  • Vehicles are driven on the left hand side.
  • All passengers including the drivers must use a seat belt at all times; if fitted.
  • Cell Phones/Mobiles are prohibited while driving.
  • Drivers must use their turn indicators prior to turning.
  • Don't drink and drive.
  • Always carry your National License and International License when driving.
  • Follow Speed Signs.

Child Safety Seats

Children under 4 must be seated in a child seat in the back. Children under 12 must also be seated in the back with seat belts fastened.

Road Signs

Malaysian road signs are in the countries local language which is Malay, however English is mostly used for important information/places, such as tourist attractions, airports, railway stations...etc. Malaysia generally takes on Australian-Japan-Switzerland standard of road signs. Warning signs are typically diamond shaped and are yellow and black or red and white in colour. Expressways and highways uses green coloured signs for destinations, other roads will use blue and yellow. Motorcycle lane signs are blue. White with green letters and maroon with white letters are used for tourist destinations. Constructions signs are in orange and black. 

Visa Information

Visa, Passport and Entry requirements for Australians visiting Malaysia;

  • Australian passport holders do not require a visa for leisure visits of less than 3 months. A return airline tickets or onward travel tickets is required as well as adequate funds for their stay. For visits longer than 3 months contact the Consulate of Malaysia
  • A Passport is required to enter into Malaysia with at least 6-months validity from the date of entry.
