Driving Licence

A full valid driver’s license is required for a minimum of 1 year. An International licence is required for Australian drivers licence holders.

Rules and Regulations

General driving rules and regulations in Romania;

Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road.
Pass car on the left hand side of the road.
Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, with the exception of a hands free system.
Dipped headlights are to be used at all times.
Radar detectors are banned.
Seat belts are mandatory and must be worn by all passengers and driver.
Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid drivers licence, registration documents and insurance documents.

Child Safety Seats

For children under the age of 4 years old a child safety seat must be used. Passengers under the age of 12 years old or under 1.5m are required to be seated in the back seats of the vehicle.

Speed Limits

It is essential that you observe the speed limits, as conditions of the roads aren't in immaculate condition and live animals on the side of the road are potential hazards especially in rural roads. Below are the speed limits in Romania, unless signed otherwise;

Urban Roads (built up areas): 50km/h
Rural Roads (outside towns): 90km/h
Motorways: 100-120km/h

Drink Driving

Being under the influence of alcohol while driving is dangerous and is a criminal offence to have any alcohol in your system (0% BAC) while operating a vehicle. Serious consequences apply to motorists over the limit.

Tolls

A vignette sticker is required by all motorists to be permitted to drive on national roads in Romania. Stickers avialable are weekly, monthly and annual and can be purchased at most petrol stations and online via a credit card.

Road Signs

Road Signs in Romania adopts the standardization of the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals which many European countries now utilize, but with slight variance. Signs in Romania are commonly found in the countries local language however English is also used on city roads and state highways. The signs are very easy to understand as the vast majority of them are posted with symbols. Warning Signs are generally triangular in shape with a red border, white background or yellow and a symbol in the middle. Prohibitory Signs are signs where motorists must follow the actions they are permitted or forbidden to do. These signs vary in shapes from a circle, octagon and a box. You will find these signs in either blue with a white symbol in the middle and white with a red border. Information Signs are indicated with a blue or green background and white text providing motorists with information such as directions.

Parking

Parking in Romania uses the pay-n-display system, machines are limited so tickets will need to be purchased from a uniformed parking officer. Tickets will then need to be displayed on the vehicles front windscreen. Illegally parked vehicles or unpaid parking are subject to their vehicles either being clamped or towed away.

Visa Information

Visa, passport and entry requirements for Australians visiting Romania;

Australian passport holders do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days within a 6 months period, from the first date of entry into Romania. Contact the Embassy of Romania in your local state for information regarding working visa's or any other special visa's.

A return/onward travel ticket/itinerary is required.
