Driving Licence

A full valid driver’s license is required for a minimum of 2 years. An International licence is required for Australian drivers licence holders.

Age Restrictions

Generally the minimum age is 21 years, but can vary between the car hire company and location. Maximum age limits apply in some locations, a young/senior driver surcharge may apply. Please check Terms and Conditions when making an enquiry or booking.

Rules and Regulations

General driving rules and regulations in Slovenia;

  • Driving is on the right hand side of the road.
  • Pass cars on the left hand side of the road.
  • Headlights are to be used at all times.
  • Seat belts must be worn by all passengers and driver.
  • Mobile phones cannot be used while driving, with the exception of a hands free system.
  • Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid drivers licence, registration documents and insurance documents.

Child Safety Seats

Passengers under the age of 12 years old must only be seated in the back seats of the vehicle, if suitable a proper child seat should be used as well.

Speed Limits

Speed limits in Portugal are shown in Kilometres per hour (km/h) and are clearly posted on most roads. Police will issue on-the-spot fines to speeding motorists which will need to be paid immediately. Below are the speed limits in Slovenia, unless signed otherwise.

  • Urban Roads (built up areas): 50km/h
  • Rural Roads (outside towns): 90km/h
  • Motorways: 100-130km/h

Drink Driving

Random breath tests are carried out regularly on motorists, to ensure drivers are not under the influence of alcohol. The allowable blood alcohol content (BAC) limit is 0.05mg/100ml. Drivers found over the limit face hefty fines.

Tolls

All types of vehicles are required to have a Vignette Sticker attached to the windscreen to be able to drive on Slovenian motorways. Most car hire suppliers will have these stickers attached to their vehicles, if used the supplier will forward the bill to the hirer.

Road Signs

Road signs in Slovenia are very similar to the signs used in other European countries but with differences in colour, shapes, typeface or arrows. Most signs will be shown in the countries local language, however English is also used on most major signs. Signs with symbols are used the most in Slovenia which provides easier understanding and simpler to read. Warning Signs are generally triangular in shape with a red border, white background or and a black symbol or text in the middle. Prohibitory Signs are signs which motorists must follow. These signs vary in shapes from a circle, octagon and a box. You will find these signs in either blue with a white symbol in the middle and white with a red border. Information Signs are indicated with a blue or green background and white text providing motorists with information.

Parking

Parking in major cities are divided into zones which vary in prices and allowable time. Depending on the zone parked in, make sure to check signage for payment instructions and any parking restrictions. Parking meters and pay-n-display are most commonly used in most cities, machines are located along the street and accept cash or credit cards.

Visa Information

Visa, passport and entry requirements for Australians visiting Slovenia;

  • Australian passport holders do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days. Contact the Consulate or Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in your local state for additional information regarding special visa's.
  • A valid passport is required with at least 3 months validity from the date of departure of Slovenia.
