Rules and Regulations

General driving rules and regulations in Bangkok, Thailand;

  • Driving is on the left of the road
  • It is mandatory to carry your driving licence and a copy of the vehicle registration document

  • Flashing of headlights by other vehicles is a warning signal meaning "get out of my way"
  • Always check for motorbikes around you while driving and when exiting your vehicle
  • It is not obligatory for child safety seats to be used

Drink Driving

The legal Blood Alcohol Limit (BAC) in Thailand is 0.5mg of alcohol per litre of blood. Drivers caught over the limit face heavy fines and possible imprisonment.

Road Signs

Road signs in Bangkok, Thailand are in Thai, but have English at the bottom. Warning Signs warn drivers of change of conditions or upcoming hazards, these signs are diamond in shape which have a black border with a yellow background and a symbol in the middle. Prohibitory signs will have a red border with a white background and a symbol in the middle; some examples are 'No Left Turn'. Restrictive signs are quite similar to Prohibitory signs but tells drivers which vehicles are restricted and speed limits. Mandatory signs; drivers must comply (eg. Keep Left). Directional signs are in blue.

Visa Information

Visa, Passport and Entry requirements for Australians visiting Thailand;

  • Australian passports holders do not require a visa for the purpose of tourism for stays under 30 days. Stays over 30 days or for business or work matters, visa's can be applied for at the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate.
  • Return/Onward ticket is required.
  • A passport is required to enter Thailand, with at-least 6 months validity is required.
