Originally founded by traders from Marseille, Avignon grew over the centuries into a wealthy and vibrant city, an important centre for Celts, Romans, as well as modern day French. During medieval times the city became home to the popes who were fleeing the corruption of Rome, and since then has been regarded as a sacred and cherished city. It is a comfortable drive to Marseille, Aix en Provence, and Montpellier, while also being a great place to base yourself while exploring southern France with your hire car.

The historic centre, and by far the most famous attraction in Avignon, is Palais des Papes, the Palace of the Popes. Dating back to the 14th century, the palace is where popes took refuge from the corruption of Rome. Drive your hire car into the centre of the city, and explore the magnificent structure, which is the largest gothic palace in Europe. Complete with detailed historic architecture, and superb paintings, the palace is a highly popular place to visit.
Drive your hire car a short distance north of here, towards the river where you will find another of the famous historical sites in Avignon, The Pont Saint-Bénézet. A grand bridge dating back to the 12th century, the legend is it was built by a local shepherd. Only 4 or the original 22 arches remain today, but the impressive size and quality of the bridge never fails to amaze anyone.
To see a great art exhibit, check out the Musée Du Petit Palais, which is also in the town centre. Collections of paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods are on display here, and definitely worth checking out.
Back in the centre of town, you will find a building unlike no other in France, the Église Notre-Dame de Calais or the Church of Notre Dame in English. Built in the 13th century when the area was under English occupation, this is the only English gothic style church in France and has in the past been used for several famous weddings.
Finally once you have explored what the city has to offer, jump in your hire car and head off to explore the lovely scenery for which southern France is famous. Visit nearby Montpellier, Aix en Provence or Marseille, or simply just cruise through the countryside and perhaps stop at the small towns and wineries you'll find along the way.
