The historic centre, and by far the most famous attraction in Avignon, is Palais des Papes, the Palace of the Popes. Dating back to the 14th century, the palace is where popes took refuge from the corruption of Rome. A grand bridge dating back to the 12th century, the legend is it was built by a local shepherd. Built in the 13th century when the area was under English occupation, this is the only English gothic style church in France and has in the past been used for several famous weddings.
