London Heathrow Airport is the largest airport in the UK - welcoming over 200,000 passengers on average per day! It is the primary airport in London and the air gateway into the United Kingdom. London Heathrow Airport is also the busiest airport in the world for International passenger traffic, with only 7 percent of passengers are domestic.
The major expansion of Heathrow Airport began in 1944 when the original Great West Aerodome was redesigned to handle long-distance military flights. When the war ended, those plans were scrapped and it was turned to commercial flights instead. Today, Heathrow is 1,227 hectares in size with five terminals and two runways that serve over 80 different airlines.
The airport is conveniently located 27kms west of central London (approximately 40 minutes drive depending on traffic) - close to the main highways M4 and M25. If you are staying in the area for a few days or exploring the UK then hiring a car is the best way to get around.
DriveAway partners with major suppliers in the UK including Alamo, Avis, Enterprise, Europcar and Hertz which are located at the airport terminals. There are plenty of vehicles to choose from. Small vehicles perfect for navigating nearby London and quaint countrysides to luxury vehicles which will allow you to travel in style.
