Licence Requirements

A full valid driver's licence is required for a minimum of 1 year. An International Drivers Licence is required for Australian drivers licence holders.


Age Restrictions

Generally the minimum age is 25 years, but can vary between the car hire company and location. Maximum age limits apply in some locations, a young/senior driver surcharge may apply. Please check Terms and Conditions when making an enquiry or booking.


Rules and Regulations

General driving rules and regulations in Argentina:

  • Driving is on the right hand side of the road.
  • Pass others on the left hand side of the road.
  • All occupants in a vehicle must wear a seat belt.
  • Mobile Phones are not permitted while driving, with the exception of a hands-free system.
  • Always use indicator lights when turning.
  • Left turn is not permitted at most intersections, be sure to check signage.
  • Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid drivers licence, registration documents and insurance documents.

Equipment

The following equipment are required to be carried in the vehicle and which are to be used in the event of an incident, accident or breakdown.

  • x2 Warning Triangle: to be used at the event of an accident or breakdown to warn following traffic.

Child Safety Seats

Children aged under 4 years old must be seated in an appropriate child restraint. Any children under 12 years old should be seated in the back seats wearing a seat belt.


Speed Limits

Speed checks are carried out regularly by local authorities, therefore always keep to the speed limit signed.

  • Urban Areas (built up areas): 60km/h
  • Rural Roads (outside towns): 100km/h
  • Motorways: 120km/h

Drink Driving

Motorists are only allowed a BAC (blood alcohol content) limit of 0.05mg/ per 100ml of blood in Argentina. Motorists will be fined and possibly arrested if the allowable limit is exceeded.


Tolls

A number of national routes in Argentina use tolls, fees are determined either by distance travelled or a fix rate depending on vehicle class and the time of day. Some toll applicable roads only accept payment electronically using a transponder in the vehicle, while some still offer payment in cash or credit cards. Check local tourists offices for information before hand.


Road Signs

  • Regulatory Signs (eg. Speed Limits) instruct motorists what they must and should not do. These signs will vary in shapes, sizes and colour.
  • Warning Signs (e.g. Changes in road conditions) warn motorists any potential hazard, obstacle or condition up ahead. These signs are generally yellow in colour with a black symbol in the middle.
  • Information Signs (e.g. Directions) provides motorists with direction information, street/road name/number, places of interest...etc. Signs with a green background provide information to roads/streets, suburbs and cities, while brown or blue signs are used for facilities and attractions.


    Parking

    Do not park on the side of the road where you're facing directly to traffic, your vehicle may be towed. Parking is mainly on-street and in many areas free except in some major cities. Make sure to check any signage before leaving your vehicle.


    Visa Information

    Visa, passport and entry requirements for Australians visiting Argentina;

    • Australian passport holders do not require a visa for the purpose of tourism or business for stays up to 90 days. Contact the Consulate or Embassy of the Argentine Republic in your local state for additional information regarding visas.
    • A valid passport with at-least 6 months validity is required.
    • A return/onward travel ticket/itinerary is required.
