Florida Overseas Highway

Take a convertible on the road for a gorgeous trip through southern Florida on the Overseas Highway, traveling from Miami through the Florida Keys to Key west, America’s “southernmost city”. This route is ideal for scuba divers, seafood lovers and those who just want to relax with the sand and sun.

Known as the “Highway That Goes to Sea”, the Overseas Highway follows the path of the historic Florida East Coast Railroad, which was irreparably damaged by a hurricane in 1935. Rather than rebuilding as it was, the US government decided to create highway on the old rail bed. While this road is rather narrow, it provides views of astoundingly blue water as you glide from key to key.

Pick up your vehicle in Miami and spend a few days enjoying the highly esteemed beaches, cuisine, shopping, art and, of course, nightlife of this famous cultural hub. Get a taste of Cuban culture as you stroll through the neighbourhood of Little Havana, or hit the town at some of South Beach’s high-end clubs and restaurants.

From Miami, start your journey on the Overseas Highway, which covers 181km of this 241km drive. There are five main regions in the Keys: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West. Heading south you’ll find them in this order, each with their own personality and a plethora of options for quick stops or overnight stays. If it’s scuba diving you’re after, select a location between Tavernier and Big Pine Key, a segment of this path said to provide the best water and marine life for diving.

While exploring the immaculate waters and scenery of the Florida Keys, take care to keep a safe distance from all coral and do not feed any animals. This entire region is protected as the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and must be protected.
