Lighthouse Route - Nova Scotia

With over 160 historic lighthouses dotted along the coastline of Nova Scotia in Canada’s east, this driving route is perfect for any maritime traveller looking to take in the sights and sounds of the sea.

Begin in the bustling capital of Halifax and head southwest to Peggy’s Cove where you’ll find the iconic Peggy’s Lighthouse, which is said to be the most photographed in Canada. Pack a picnic lunch, hike along the rocks and take in all the seaside views of the colourful boats and rustic cottages along the shore. Visit the deGarthe Gallery and Museum or partake in some of the many activities on offer including kayaking, scuba diving or taking a boat tour.

Next, head off to the tiny village of Chester. This quaint village is situated on a peninsula halfway along the coast of Mahone Bay and is full of picturesque sites. Jump back in your car and travel further south west to the port town of Lunenburg. Be sure to visit the Old Town which is the best surviving planned British Colonial settlement in North America and dates back to 1753. The next stop on your trip is the Fort Point lighthouse and is situated in on the shore of Liverpool Harbour. This lighthouse is pre-Confederation and a great place to stop and relax.

Drive onward to the historic town of Shelburne. Here you will find beautiful heritage properties and preserved 18th century houses and buildings. Take a wander down to the historic Waterfront District and visit some of the galleries, antique stores and cafes.

The last stop on this trip is vibrant port town of Yarmouth. With a rich maritime history and a vast amount of unique attractions to visit, it is a great place to finish your journey. Wander among over 400 sea captain homes, visit the historical Yarmouth County Museum and see the famous Cape Forchu Lightstation, which is a perfect spot to check out the tea rooms and soak in the sun and sea.
