The Seward Highway

Alaska is a destination growing quickly on everyone’s to-do list and The Seward Highway is definitely a must-see!

Named by the US government as an All-American Road, The Seward Highway in Alaska extends 125 miles (approximately 200 km) between Seward and Anchorage, and is a destination in itself. The highway winds through a land of remarkable beauty, saltwater bays, frigid blue glaciers, knife-edged ridges and alpine valleys.

Admire the flora and fauna of the westernmost and the northernmost national park in the US – Chugach State Park. Marvel at the silty Turnagain Arm that stretches to the sharp angles of the Kenai Mountains. Spot Beluga whales, their white bodies easily visible in the dark waters of the Kachemak Bay around Bird Point.

Slopes of wildflowers greet visitors at Mount Alyeska while the majestic eagles soar overhead. Watch the trains plow by against great backdrops and meet friendly locals along the way.

The glaciers, icebergs and lush wetlands of Portage Valley will charm as you make your way between Anchorage - a favorite for migratory birds and Seward – the mural capital of Alaska.

The crowning view on the Seward Highway is the approach to Resurrection Bay. The magnificent views you'll find along this drive are not complete without a slab of a freshly baked pie or some fresh local oysters. The best time for driving along Seward Highway is in the US summer months (July-August), but always watch out for a moose on the road!
