A great way to begin your visit to Naples is by heading to Castel dell'Ovo, located on a small island just to the west of Naples harbour. A causeway connects the island to the mainland, and you can drive your hire car across and visit the 12th century castle. Be sure to make the journey to one of the castle towers from where you will get an excellent view of the Naples waterfront. Within the castle you can also visit the Ethno-Prehistory Museum, which specialises in displays on the areas ancient past.

A short drive from the harbour you will discover many museums which are highly recommended for visitors. The Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte is located within an 18th century palace and houses a large collection of art by Farnese and Bourbon rulers, and the Naples National Archaeology Museum is also nearby and is one of the leading archaeological museums in the world. Both museums are highly recommended for travellers staying in Naples.

A short distance southeast of Naples you will find some of the most famous ruins in Italy. About a half hour drive from the city lies Pompeii which is complete with the remains of ancient temples, baths, mosaics and columns. A little closer to Naples are the ruins of Herculaneum, another town destroyed by the massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. Smaller and wealthier than Pompeii, the remains at Herculaneum are still being excavated and many treasures of the past are constantly being discovered.
